Summarize Repeated Measurements

Calculate descriptive statistics and confidence intervals for repeated measurements. Check units, missing values and sampling in NotyPlot.

Start this workflow
InputA table of repeated measurements with consistent units.
OutputDescriptive statistics and confidence intervals for the selected values.

Workflow

  1. Import the measurement table and select the dataset or value series to summarize.
  2. Verify units, remove non-numeric placeholders and identify missing values before interpreting statistics.
  3. Run statistics and review n, mean, median, standard deviation, coefficient of variation, minimum and maximum.
  4. Inspect the 95% confidence interval when available and compare it with the observed spread.
  5. Investigate unexpected outliers against the source measurements rather than deleting them automatically.
  6. Export the statistics CSV and report the sampling method together with the summary values.

What this workflow helps you do

Summarize repeated measurements with descriptive statistics while keeping sample size, spread and uncertainty visible. NotyPlot calculates values such as mean, median, standard deviation, coefficient of variation, range and a 95% confidence interval for the selected dataset.

Use this workflow when

  • Summarizing repeated length, area, thickness or other scalar measurements.
  • Comparing the spread of repeated measurements before reporting a mean.
  • Exporting a compact statistical summary from a measurement table.

What you need before you start

  • A table of comparable numeric measurements using a consistent unit.
  • A clear definition of what each repeated value represents.
  • Sampling information needed to decide whether the values are independent and representative.

Step-by-step workflow

What to review in the result

  • All summarized values have the same meaning and unit.
  • Sample size is large enough for the intended inference.
  • Mean and median differences are considered when the distribution is skewed.
  • The confidence interval is not confused with the full data range or individual measurement uncertainty.

Before you report or export

  • Report n with mean and spread.
  • Distinguish technical repeats, fields of view and independent specimens in the sampling description.
  • Use a statistical comparison test separately when the question is whether groups differ significantly.

Limitations and interpretation

  • Descriptive statistics do not correct biased sampling or inconsistent measurement rules.
  • A 95% confidence interval for the mean is not the same as a 95% prediction interval for individual measurements.
  • Small samples can give unstable estimates of spread and confidence intervals.
